(815pp, Castricum 2018) Over the course of a decade and half, SIS member Nicolàs de Hilster has brought his knowledge as a professional hydrographic surveyor and woodworking skills to bear on constructing replicas of all the navigational instruments commonly in use before the adoption of telescopic sights. Researching their origins, relative merits and accuracy when used has resulted in a PhD for Nicolàs. The present, beautifully produced hardback book is the summation of that work and gives a comprehensive account of the history of these instruments and how they work. The second, corrected, edition (2020) is now available.
