Expression of Interest

Our Long Study Tour for 2024 will be focused around the historic sites and collections around the Turkish city of Istanbul. This will be the first time that SIS has travelled to this fascinating city!

We are investigating visits to the following places, among others:

  • Koç Museum of Transport
  • Topkapi Palace Museum*
  • Basilica Cistern
  • Hagia Sophia
  • Blue Mosque
  • Museum of Pharmacy
  • Museum of Archaeology
  • Museum of the History of Islamic Science and Technology
  • Istanbul Technical University (esp geodesy instruments)
  • Kandilli Observatory (seismological instruments + library with rare historic manuscripts on astronomy, astrology and mathematics)

Our host will be Dr Taha Arslan, Istanbul Medeniyet University, and our tour will include a behind-the-scenes visit to his astrolabe workshop.

We anticipate the registration fee will be around £450 per person to include the welcome reception, entrance fees, behind-the-scenes tours, transport between venues as required, the conference dinner and some lunches where feasible. We will endeavour to keep the costs as affordable as possible.

Delegates will be required to organise their own travel and accommodation arrangements for Istanbul. We will be based in historic district of Sultanahmet, exact details to be confirmed.

The final programme with confirmed visits and booking form will be available in the March 2024 Bulletin but to help us plan most effectively we would be grateful if you could indicate your expression of interest, without obligation, by emailing the Executive Officer (info@scientificinstrumentsociety.org) by

31st January 2024.

* The Topkapi Clock Museum is currently closed but we are investigating a possible visit in May.
