Fireside Chat ’The Schumacher Slide Rule — A Slide Rule with divisions at equal intervals’
April 9 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm BST
Presented by Jerry McCarthy.
The device is formally known as a Faber-Castell model 366 slide rule, with the subtitle “System Schumacher”. It was produced and sold from 1909 to 1929. The title page of a 1909 document for this slide rule refers to the device as “A Slide Rule with divisions at equal intervals based on indices from number theory”.1 The slide rule has its divisions at non-logarithmic intervals, and yet the device can carry out multiplication, integer division, powers, and so on, albeit within a limited range.
