This talk traces the history of these instruments through a large number of recent illustrations and discoveries, both in terms of objects and documents. It deals in particular with the great dynasties of makers and their workshops, the typology of instruments, their use, their dating and ends with the presentation of exceptional pieces in silver and gold.
